A strange thing happened between the glory days of sport in America and the modern age. The spotlight got hotter. No longer is the attention on the rest of the world. No one cares anymore about State Plan 14.25, the government-sponsored program that turned East German female swimmers into men. No one cares about Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson anymore. The biggest cheaters in the world are Americans. Watching the hearings Tuesday, as members of Congress lobbed softballs at Selig and Fehr, you couldn't help but feel the embarrassment of what we've allowed to happen in this country. Watching the teary admission last month when Jones stood on courthouse steps should have been hard on sports fans everywhere. "I've let my country down," she said.
