Unselfish Appel is all about team.

Almost mysteriously, Jayne Appel's eyes lit up as she looked over the stat sheet after Saturday's game at Maples Pavilion. She could not possibly have seen anything about herself on that paper that was more impressive than what she actually accomplished in Stanford's 72-52 win over Cal. Numbers don't begin to describe how Appel played. The word "sublime" might be a start. "Candice was 14-for-14 from the line," Appel said, explaining the bright eyes. The free throws accounted for half of Stanford guard Candice Wiggins' 28 points, more than double what any other player scored Saturday. Wiggins, as usual, was the Cardinal's lighter fluid. Appel was a revelation.
