Painful Loss Alters Outlook For UCONN.
The UConn women's basketball program is blessed with an embarrassment of talent — All-America high school players galore — and when one goes down, there usually is someone nearly as good ready to pop up from the bench to take her place. When Elena Delle Donne arrives in Storrs next season, the talent will be as immense and deep as any time since the 39-0 team of 2002. Yet one of those opportunities, one of those slippery, elusive opportunities to steal a national championship one year ahead of schedule, clearly had arrived this early season. Tennessee entered No. 1. Tennessee has Candace Parker. Tennessee is a terrific basketball team. But a month into the season, UConn sure looked to be the best team in the country. Suddenly, the dynamic changed.
