Beware Bay Area road trips: Surging Cal has joined seven-time conference champ Stanford among nation’s elite.
Days before the start of the season, Stanford women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer sat inside Haas Pavilion's Club Room discussing the ins and outs of her team when the subject of Cal came up. VanDerveer sang the Bears' praises. She welcomed their budding success and celebrated the "buzz" it brings to the Bay Area women's hoops scene. But when the conversation veered toward Pac-10 play, her kind words came with one small stipulation. "I'm fine with us being first," she said, "and they can be second." The room filled with laughter, yet there was still something to be said for VanDerveer's remark.
Women's hoops, and nothin' but the hoops.
