Atlantic 10 Commissioner Linda Bruno’s career path nontraditional.

In terms of advice to young people wanting to enter sports management and administration, Linda Bruno's deepest instinct is to encourage a bit of risk. In terms of the way she successfully has overseen the Atlantic 10 Conference since becoming commissioner in 1994, Bruno's forte has been to skirt risk and stick with the league's roots. The two ideals are not mutually exclusive, as she has proven. Bruno took what was nearly an accidental path to becoming one of the few female NCAA conference commissioners. Once she got there, she easily identified her priority. "When you don't have [Division] I-A football, you have to rely on being good in men's basketball," Bruno said this week. The A-10's roots are deep in basketball, and member schools continue to show up regularly in the NCAA tournament field. Under Bruno, the league has grown to 14 diverse members -- public and private, big and small -- with the conference having the luxury of choosing which schools to add and when.
